More Fun with Mulberries

Yesterday I picked up the farm share: lettuce, spinach, chard, garlic scapes, shelling peas, snow peas, and strawberries. So dinner last night was chicken, quinoa tossed with raw peas and garlic scapes, and a big salad: lettuce, cucumber, peas, goat cheese, and mulberries. Yes, I went out to that tree again. And in 15 minutes got almost a full quart of berries. That tree gets better every year!

We were left after dinner with a large bowl of mulberries and another of strawberries. "Make a crisp!" requested the 8 year old. So, I got it ready last night and this morning got up, popped it in the oven, and went back to bed for 20 minutes. It was nice having warm crisp for breakfast. And all from berries picked by me!

Doesn't it look yummy?

  1. That DOES look yummy! Hey Donna, It's strawberry picking time here in Wisconsin and I'm ready for jammin'! I see your inventory on the side of your blog, but is there an easy way to cross-reference the items to your blog and see your recipes? I usually make different blends for my jam and I want to make the strawberry jalapeno jam. Did you work off of a recipe, or just wing it?

  2. This was actually a microwave jam recipe, but I just eliminated the microwave and did it the "old fashioned" way. To be fair, I only had 1 cup of jalapenos so my proportions were 4 c. strawberries to 1 c. jalapenos. Spicy enough at that ratio anyway!

    Strawberry Jalapeno Jam
    3 cups crushed strawberries
    2 cups chopped jalapenos
1 package (1-3/4 oz.) powdered fruit pectin (approx. 60 g.)
    7 cups sugar

Mix berries, peppers, and pectin, bring to a boil, add the sugar all at once and boil hard for 1 minute. Makes about 8 half-pints.

  3. And, yes, I've been winging it a lot more lately... Makes for some interesting results...

Funny you should ask about the cross referencing. There will be an entry soon about a new label printing system my husband is concocting which will automatically update my inventory and hopefully link back to the blog page when I scan the jar (using my iPhone, way cool). More to come, once the kinks are worked out!

  4. Thanks so much for the recipe! That will be great to have a link back to your blog page for each item!!!

    Thanks again!
