"B" Soup

Beef. Beans. Barley. Beer.

It's an experiment, as are most of my soups. I have been holding on to a pound of Calypso beans I bought last year at a Farmer's Market in Cleveland. They are from Alta Mae Farm, in Middlefield, Ohio. They are such pretty beans, I could not resist. I love the patterns. I think they look like little orcas:
Anyway, I have been waiting for the right time to make something with them. As this is my last free weekend for a while, and it got cold again, it seemed like a good day to make soup. I had leftover pot roast in the fridge, with its tomato based sauce, and it was about a pound and a quarter of meat with about 2 pints of sauce. I rinsed the beans and boiled them for 2 minutes then let them sit, covered, for an hour. They aren't as starkly black and white but they are still pretty! Here's the recipe, all measurements are estimates...

1 leek, sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 red onion, chopped
4 large carrots, chopped
1 bunch celeriac stems, chopped
6 pints water
1 pound Calypso beans, quick-soaked
leftover pot roast plus sauce
2 bay leaves
1-2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 bottle Killian's Irish Red
1.5 cups pearled barley
kosher salt and pepper to taste

Bring to a boil, then simmer for a few hours until the barley and the beans are tender. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to can this one or just let us eat it over the next few days!

  1. Evidently I am not the only one who thinks they look like orcas. They have been called "Orca Beans."

I did end up canning 5 pints. I am out of pint jars again...

  2. Don't know what Orcas are...

Hi Donna, Hey I miss you!!! Thanks for the comment. I wish I had trees that dropped their leaves, heck at this point, I just wish I had trees!!! A few years ago we had "Bark Beetles" that destroyed over 55 trees! We lost a lot!

I have been doing FABULOUS!!! We were supposed to go to the Autism Day at the Double 6 Ranch, but it rained and didn't want to slop in mud.

As you can see in my blog, I have been crafting like crazy, funny because I am not a crafter, so I have to call myself an "artist" aha! That it, I'm an artist!

I have a project that I have been working on for a while and will be visiting my sister and brother in law this week in Vegas to give it to her. I hope she likes it. I may have mentioned that my sister and BIL went to Paris and London. Well I did a 4x2 board highlighting their trip. Did I say how much work it was? WOW!

I didn't can this year, it just slipped by. However, I did think about salsa. We went down the mountain today and found tomatoes for 33 cents a pound! WOW! But I wasn't thinking of canning until now.

Drop me a line and let me know how are you!
